My daughter is turning 6 next weekend and she is begging for some goldfish. Is this a good idea? If so, what kind of tank? I really don't want to spend gobs of money on them, I was thinking the ole Dr. Seuss fish bowl and a couple of fish. Also, I have 2 cats. Is this a good idea? Can anyone guide me?
My only advice... be prepared to make "replacements" and hide the food. We never had a goldfish (in the Dr. Seuss type bowl) to live for more than a few months. I don't know if it was the bowl without a pump, or the fact that they were often overfed. I have heard that they will eat as much as you put in there but they only need a very small pinch--which is not easy for little fingers. Plus, watching them eat was great entertainment. We had many goldfish funerals! LOL
I think it's a good idea. I think you can buy a very small tank with a pump for not too much $$. They may live a little longer in that then in a plain old gold fish bowl, but I'm really not sure. We always had fish when i was growing up and had many funerals. We'd give them a "burial at sea" by flushing them down the toilet. I don't remember it ever bothering my brother or I.

Too funny - I NEVER thought about funerals. Wow, I guess it will be a life lesson. Thanks for the input - I did find a fish tank kit that Wal-Mart sells for like $30 bucks just right for goldfish and they come in pink!! I'll let cha know how it pans out - I think I am going to do it for her!
