Natalie had her first full-fledged "fit pitching" Thursday. She was getting into something she wasn't supposed to. I told her NO, she sat down on the floor, kicked her feet and screamed. After a few seconds of this, she lay down on her stomach, kicked her legs, and continued screaming. Amy, my mother, and I looked at her and started laughing. Now we are just waiting on her to do it more often when it won't be funny. I recall when my children did that, I ignored them. Without an audience they will calm down more quickly.
Today, I picked her up from her pack and play. The back of her onesie was soaked. Then I discovered she'd taken off her diaper. OOPS, my bad. I forgot to button the onesie snaps when I had previously changed her diaper. Now I'm wondering what special moments do you remember as "firsts" for your children? My personal favorite was one day I was taking a shower. I saw the shower curtain move, and my almost 2 year old looking at me. He said for the first time the sweetest words I ever heard: I love you. A bit garbled but I understood him. Another time, I got up and went to check on Andrew. He wasn't in his bed. Looked all over the house, didn't see him, went into panic mode. Decided to check the kitchen again, and noticed the fridge door was open. And there sat Andrew about 16 months old. In front of him were the packages of hot dogs and sliced cheese. He had taken a bit of hot dog, thrown it on the floor. A bite of cheese, thrown it on the floor. There were a lot of barely eaten hot dogs and cheese on the floor. It was also the first time he's climbed out of his baby bed. It wouldn't be the last because not long after, I woke up to find him in the living room, with the tv on, and he was watching a video we rented for him. He'd figured out how to stand on his rocking horse and insert the video in the VCR, and what to push to make it play. With Amy, it was the time she was pushing her doll stroller and the wheels got caught on the edge of an area rug. My sweet little 2 1/2 year old put her hands on her hips, stomped one of her feet, and said well (4 letter word that starts with S). I was trying not to laugh as I told her we don't use those words in our house. There was also the time when she was 3. Got her ready for church. We get to church and had to walk across the street from the parking lot. I picked up Amy to carry her across the road, and discoverd she had taken off her underwear before we left the house. I had to scrounge through the day care rooms to find a diaper big enough for her. Another time, she was in trouble for something and her daddy said he would spank her if she didn't quit. She went to her room and a few seconds later we saw her peer around the dining room wall. In her best 5 year old voice she announced loudly "God don't want you to spank me. He'll get mad if you do". These are the stories we still tell today. ![]() |

Reading your stories I can say that I have many many just like yours. The thing about kids is that when you have more than one it feels like if you take your eye off of them for one millisecond, that is when stories like the hotdog happen. I can't tell you how many times when I have been tied up for just a few minutes (on the toilet) or somewhere that a mom should be allowed to be by herself for a moment, I come back to check on my little angels only to find that something is ary. Thank God nothing major has happened, but things like, getting into vaseoline and wiping it all over their face or the wall, toilet paper (an entire roll) shoved into a toilet and being flushed while the overflow is happening, baby powder all over a bedroom and in their hair, milk all over the kitchen floor where they have tried to pour their own sippy cup and finally, the haircuts they think they can just take care of themselves. Makes you want to see a specialist about adding some eyes in the back of your head for real and perhaps 4 more arms!

One of my favorite happened about six months ago. Ronald was in his high chair and I was trying to feed him some oatmeal. Every time I would get the spoon close to his face he would fuss and shake his head no. I kept trying to distract him and get some breakfast in him. AFter ten minutes or so, I finally decided he must just not be hungry, so I laid the spoon down and went to get a wipe to clean off his face. I came back a few seconds later to see him feeding himself the oatmeal. I felt like a dum dum. All he wanted the whole time I was trying to feed him was to do it himself. It was so sweet to see my baby all of a sudden seem so grown up.
Another is the first time he hugged his plush dog. His name is Rexy. He picked him up and squeezed him so tight. It was so precious. |
