It seems like everytime I thought maybe mine had a teething-related fever, it turned out they were sick. I think if it's anything more than just a low-grade fever, it's not likely to be related to teething, but I've just googled it and found that there is disagreement between pediatricians and parents as to whether teething causes any fever at all. Here's a NYTimes article, but it only addresses high fever. http://www.nytimes.com/2008/04/01/health/01real.html?ex...rtner=rssnyt&emc=rss
How high is his fever? My pediatrician said the symtpoms of teething can cause a slight rise in body temp, but if it's over 100.3 or so, it's probably secondary to something else. Like the article said, I think there is controversy among pediatricians regarding the teeting/fever debate.
I have friends who swear molars are a whole different ballgame...that they cause more symptoms that the other teeth. Don't know...haven't been there yet! Other thoughts?
Hope he feels better!! Ben missed Jack in library class.
My LO never did get a fever but I've heard of many who did. But now that he's cutting his last two canine teeth in he has been warmer than usual. I will be soooooooo glad when teething is over. Thank goodness for popsicles. I hope Jack feels better soon.
Thanks guys. It was 101. I called his pedi and talked to the nurse. She asked if he seemed sick at all. I said no. However, he is drooling, shoving his hands in his mouth and his bum is suddenly red (all signs of teething in the past). She said it could be. But if the temp went any higher probably not. After some Children's Ibuprofen, the temp came right down and he's been fine the rest of the day. So.....hopefully he's not sick and it is a teething thing. So far it looks like it. I'll keep you guys posted.
Alec has been running a low grade fever,(like 99.8 or lower) for the last couple of days. And he has been very fussy and putting his hands in his mouth. I know it sounds just like teething but I don't see eveidence of a tooth yet. Is this normal? Could it be a tooth that hasn't sufaced yet? He only has six teeth right now two on top, 4 on bottom. Is it possible for him to get molars before the other front teeth? Sorry to ask so much but I am just worried because it seems like Alec has low grade fevers alot. I want to blame it on teeth!!
Mom2Alec, my kids' doctor doesn't consider it a fever unless it's higher than 100.3. Babies' temperatures can vary so much, and according to the article pasted below, it's not even considered fever until around 100.5. I know mine will go up to the 99 range if they've been running around or are upset or even just at certain times of the day, but it's not a fever and they're fine. So maybe your LO doesn't even have a low-grade fever at all. http://www.babycenter.com/0_fever_84.bc
April, My pediatrician said the same thing as LawMommy posted. He said there is a normal curve through the day in which temps will naturally raise and lower. They typically are higher in the late afternoons and lower in the a.m. However, he said to use your child's behavior as a gauge (i.e. is he acting/feeling ok?).
Well, it was not a good night over here. Jack woke up with a fever and we were up treating it until 2 a.m. when it finally broke. Then we collapsed and he woke up at 6 to start his day. Ugh. I'm just glad he didn't wake up with one. I hope it's behind us. Still not sure if it's a teething thing or he's coming down with something...
Well, Alec's fever went up to 102 today. And he does act very clingy. So I still don't know if it is teething or some sort of virus. I guess I'll just wait it out until tomorrow and see if it goes up again. If it does, off to the doctor we go.
Jack woke up from his nap and had a 102 fever. Ibuprofen treated it and he's been fine ever since. He's been playing all day and acting like himself. Looks like we're both in the same boat over here. What is going on with our boys?
Not sayin' that this is the cause of your fevers, but Roseola is a virus that causes a high fever for 2-3 days followed by a rash. Also, fifths disease will do this. (Actually, Roseola is sixths disease. ????) If they are otherwise feeling ok and they break out in a rash after the fever is over, you can bet it was probably one of these. I think that these are herpes related viruses that just about everyone carries. It's just that once you are exposed and it manifests, you develop an immunity.... so, that's a good thing.
Alec only had a 99.8 temp this morning when he woke up, so that's good. He still acts sooooo whiny though. But I am glad for the temp going down. Kristit, how's Jack today?
That is soooo weird. Ronald has had at least a 102 fever since last Saturday night. I have taken him to MedCenter and his ped, but they can't find anything wrong. It has been a terrible week. On Monday I took him to MedCenter. They did a strep test, a flu test, and a chest x-ray. His ears were a little red, so they gave him amoxicillin. Wed morning, he woke up screaming, and screamed in pain for 2 hours. He was acting like him stomach was bothering him from the antibiotic. Ronald never screams like that, so I was concerned and made an appt with his ped. He finally passed out around 9:30 (really early for his nap). I took him to the ped, who did a urine test to be sure he didn't have a bladder infection. It was neg. So all they could tell me was that he must have some sort of virus that is not causing any other syptoms (his ears were no longer red). I stopped the antibiotic because the ped said there is no bacterial infection. UGH!!! He said if he is not better by Monday to bring him back. I have no idea what is wrong. Yesterday evening his nose started running a little bit, but it was clear, and there wasn't very much. He has no cough, is not acting that out of sorts (just a little slower when his fever gets up there), and is still eating and drinking (though he is eating a little bit less than normal). I am frustrated we can't figure this out. Noone is sure or can tell me anything that could be causing this. Anyone have any ideas?
