I have a few pregnant friends right now who are trying to decide just how bad it is to eat cold cuts. I stayed away from them when I was pregnant just because I was paranoid. LOL. I stayed away from tuna too even though they say you can have a little bit. But I know people who eat cold cuts and tuna and their babies are fine. Did you eat cold cuts? And if you're pregnant now, are you worried about this? Dying for a piece of turkey? A tuna salad sub? Or do you indulge?
Now I though I was pretty up on everything I was not supposed to do while preggo. I read everything, and was part of a hundred preg websites. But I did not know that you aren't supposed to eat cold cuts. Why is it that you can't eat them? I certainly had some while I was preggo.

Some people avoid them because of the risk of getting listeriosis. It's such a small risk though that I never worried about it. Both of my OBs told me it wasn't a concern.
If you are worried, though, all you have to do is microwave your lunch meat until hot to kill any bacteria.
As long as you're eating fresh lunchmeat, though, that hasn't been sitting out on a counter, and from a store with high turnover (meaning it most likely hasn't been sitting on the shelf for months), you should be fine!

My ob was pregnant while I was pregnant, so I always got her medical opinion, and what she practiced personally. She told me she heated her meat before eating it, but wasn't really concerned. But, I'm an extremist, so I pretty much cut it out completely.
As far as tuna--I tried to stick to fish and shellfish that contained the smaller amounts of mercury, looked for wild seafood rather than farm raised, and limited my intake to twice weekly. The EPA and APA both have great guidelines for the best types of seafood to consume while pregnant and bfing. Moderation is the key, IMO.
I think instead of making lists of what you are not supposed to eat while preggo (the lists are sooooo long), they should make lists of what you can eat. I think that list would be shorter . LOL!
I had gestational diabetes so the list of things I could eat was even shorter than normal.
