I have thought about asking my employer if I can start working from home so I can stay with my LO. I have it all figured out, like getting a pay cut, transferring the phone lines to my cell, and so forth. My work is not busy at all, I work full time now and I only do about 10 hours of actual work. The rest of the time I am sitting here waiting on the phone to ring, which some days it never does. He likes me being here for local support I guess bcs they work out of town and if he needs anything in town he can just call me and get me to do it. The only thing next is to ask and I am nervous. I just need some words of encouragement.....

Good luck! It sounds like you've really thought this through and have a plan worked out. I would think your boss would appreciate the business plan that you have put together. It's all about pointing out the positives to him - like the fact that you will be saving him money with a pay cut!
Keep us posted on the outcome! |

Good luck!! The worst they can do is say no.
I have made this request of employers twice in my life - once with success and once not. When I was pregnant with my first daughter I was living in the washington DC area. I had a close to 2 hour commute each way. I asked my boss if it would be ok for me to work from home two days per week (my husband was writing his dissertation and was able to watch her the other three days). My boss said yes and was more than happy to comply. He even paid part of my internet bill every month at home. I NEVER thought he would agree so easily. With my youngest daughter I was working here in Alabama. I asked and was told no, because the state had a policy against telecommuting (within postsecondary, not at all jobs). So it didn't work out that time. BUT, had I never asked, I'd have never known, you know? GOOD LUCK. And feel free to PM me if you want to talk more or need any help coming up with selling points about you working from home to give your employer. |

Hollyann- it sounds like you have put alot of thought into it already. I kind of know where you are coming from... I am a stay at home mom now but I did go back to work for 4 months before choosing to stay at home. When I returned to work I was extremely overwhelmed so I requested to go part time for my first 3 months. I knew that summer was my easist time of year so the request wouldn't put a major strain on all the other employees. I was shocked when my request was approved. I would suggest scheduling an appointment to talk with you boss and have a basic idea of what you want already typed out to present. I would point out how you plan on continuing to meet all of our responibilites and that you would still be availible from your home. Also point out the financial benefits for him. I think you'll find that he'll be more flexible than you expected. Good Luck
