So as some of you know, I write a column that runs every Sunday in The Tuscaloosa News.
I'd like to gather some stories from you all about your VERY FIRST Mother's Day and how you celebrated it, how it made you feel, why it was special, etc.
I am going to be writing about my first Mother's Day and then including snippets of your stories if you don't mind. I think readers would love to hear them.

So my question is, who doesn't mind being published?
If you want to do it, I need your stories by the weekend.
I won't use your real names.
Just tell me about your first Mother's Day in this thread and tell me the ages of your kid(s). And then watch for it in the paper on Mother's Day!
Looking forward to reading them!
And thanks so much for helping me out! Smiler

I will go first I guess...

My DH and I went to a movie on the Sat before (our first real date since our LO was born). Then on Mothers Day, my DH made a wonderful dinner. It was all kind of laid back which was great since I was still adjusting to be a full-time working mother. The sweetest and best present I got for my 1st Mother's Day was a hand-written card from my LO (he had a little help from Daddy-LOL). It was on construction paper and written in crayon. It said to the best mommy ever. In 20 years I know I won't remember the dinner or the movie (I can't even remember which movie we went to see now), but I will always, always remember the card.

My first Mother's Day was a total disaster - and actually the years after that haven't had a very good track record either...lol.

Let's start with the Saturday before my first. Hubby worked in the yard all day to make sure that he didn't have anything to do but spend time with me on Sunday. Sunday morning we all woke up and got dressed for church. I had a new Feltman Bros. outfit that I had dry cleaned and pressed for Jonah to wear and I got him all dressed and out the door we went. Jonah was NEVER a fussy baby but he would not let up that day. We couldn't even sit through church - we ended up sitting in the lobby as not to disturb anyone. Finally we headed for lunch with my parents and sister. He fussed the whole time there too and we took turns taking him outside to walk him around. At this point hubby starts talking about how his throat is really hurting him and he's having some trouble breathing.
We headed for home and I go to change Jonah out of his outfit and he had these little red bumps all under his arms and down his side - no wonder he was fussy - and as I go to put his outfit on the hanger I realize that there were straight pins in the armpits of his outfit! (GOOD ONE MOMMY!) So he had been getting stuck the whole time! Poor little man! I just sat there and cried. (That's right...mother of the year here...thank you, thank you.)
But wait - we're not done....
So I finally have Jonah calmed down and hubby busts into the room telling me that he's really having trouble breathing and that I might need to take him to the emergency room because he feels like his throat is getting tight and he's losing the ability to talk. So we drop Jonah off and head up to the ER only to discover that hubby is having a severe allergic reaction to something from working in the yard. So 5 hours later we head home with a husband who can't talk and a 4 month old with pin pricks under his arms.

The sad thing is that it never fails with my Mother's Days - they are ALWAYS crazy!

The second year I had strep throat and found out I was pregnant.
The third year hubby had to have his wisdom teeth taken out and that was the only time we could do it.
And the 4th year hubby had his vasectomy.

I'm just cautiously awaiting this year.

I remember the transition to thinking about what to get my own mom and realizing that I was on the "in" for the holiday as well.

While walking in the mall and shopping for my own mother, mother-in-law, and 2 grandmother's, my hubby stops me at a jewelry store and says, "So, do you see anything you want?". At that moment I realized that I was a mom this time!! I got big alligator tears in my eyes and spotted a white gold heart with one single diamond in the middle necklace. Hubby scooped it up without even really checking the price. I wore it home and remember touching it around my neck while looking down at my baby girl's sleeping face in her stroller. Feels like yesterday and she is now 6 years old. What a moment!

P.S. - I don't mind being published - I guess you gathered that!! Hee hee

Awe, my first mothers day….My son was born on the Monday before Mother’s Day. I was not able to bring him home until that Friday. As most first time moms know the first few days at home can be overwhelming. I can remember waking up for that midnight feeding after only 30 minutes of sleep. I cradled my new son in my arms and realized that it was my “first mother’s day”. I could not help but to think about how wonderful the feeling of motherhood is. My eyes whaled up with tears. I could not stop tearing up. I stayed up almost the entire night not wanting to put my baby boy down. Needless to say by the time morning rolled around I was exhausted and overwhelmed. My DH took over taking care of the LO so I could “try” to get some rest. I feel asleep in the recliner only to be awaken to my DH holding my LO with a bag from the Jewelry Store. When I opened the bag I found a Mother-Child pendent necklace. He had them specially put my LO birthstone in bottom. This was/is the most special piece of jewelry that I own (not including the wedding rings). When I look back at the pictures from that day, I look a total mess. My hair half up half falling down with spit up on my t-shirt, but in my face you can tell that I was beaming with pride.

Well I don't know if you would consider your first mothers day as when you are pregnant but I do! That's because I found out I was pregnant about 1 week before Mothers day. My husband made it very special and treated me as though I was already a mother. He got me a very sweet card and some roses. I remember it like it was yesterday. My son is almost 16 months.

My first Mother's Day I had told dh several times that I wanted a mother's charm. I had even shown him some that I liked so he could pick one and surprise me. Needless to say, he did surprise me but not with anything I would have ever thought of for a present. He got me a hairdryer from Sharper Image because he thought I needed a new one. I didn't even need a new hairdryer and I sure wouldn't have ordered one from Sharper Image. Other than my present that I was upset with, I had a nice 1st Mother's Day. We still joke about the hairdryer and 6 years later it still works. But my almost 6 year old knows not to get mommy a hairdryer for a present. I did get the charm I wanted. I got it for my son's first birthday that July. The next year I wanted a bracelet with ds's name for Mother's Day. I ordered what I wanted and gave it to dh so he & ds could give it to me. They even managed to pick out a little surprise to got with it.

The last couple of year's ds has made me some really sweet presents at preschool for Mother's Day. These are always so special. The other day when I asks what he had done at school. He won't tell me because he said he was working on something for me for Mother's Day. He was so excited about his surprise for me.

I know I'm too late to be useful for the column, but I just had to share my first Mother's Day. My daughter had been born in January, 12 weeks premature. As anyone who has had a preemie can tell you, it was a roller coaster ride. It took her months to be able to breathe on her own, be able to eat, control her body temperature and gain enough weight to go home. She was connected to tubes and monitors and lived in an incubator for a long time. Her original due date came and went and she was STILL in the hospital. Finally, after visiting her in the hospital for 106 days, she came home with us on the day before my first Mother's Day. I don't think I'll ever have a better Mother's Day gift than my daughter finally coming home to her family.
