Hmmmm ... yet another newsweek article that disappoints me.
My main point of contention is this quote from teh article:
"...but not without controversy over the idea of immunizing young girls against a virus that is sexually transmitted. (The vaccine protects against the two types of HPV that cause 70 percent of cervical cancer worldwide, and against forms of the virus that cause 90 percent of genital warts in both men and women.) Another point of contention has been the vaccine's cost--about $360 for three shots taken over six months."
This makes it sounds like the ONLY points of controversy are the fact that it's linked to sexual behavior and the cost.
Yes, I know those are two real points of controversy. But there are many other controversial aspects too. For me, I could care less that it has to do with being sexually active. I have no problem with that at ALL. The cost doesn't bother me either.
What bothers ME is that:
a. we don't know for sure if this works - it is still experimental.
b. we don't know for sure that it's even SAFE - LOTS of bad side effects are being reported
c. NO ONE can explain why we are only "experimenting" on our DAUGHTERS, and not also on our sons.
I just get really really angry that these articles make this shot sound like the best thing since sliced bread, OR those - like newsweek - that claim to be examining the so called controversy, only pick the easy to defend controversial aspects that many of us care nothing about.
Sorry, that rambled. Burns me up though, especially when well-respected media don't present a full picture.
