This is one of those products that can be annoying to buy. I know I stood and scratched my head at Target looking at all the different varieties and how they fit into the doorway. I had to take my first buy back to the store and exchange it b/c it didn't fit my doorway properly. We needed a gate that fit an unusually wide doorway but we didn't want one that physically screwed into the wall. I wish I could tell you what kind we got b/c we're happy with it but there is no label on it and I can't remember. Ah well.

Anyway, for those of you who have stairs in your house who are on the market for a baby gate, here's an fyi.
Parenting Magazine recommends "The Curve Gate" by Safety 1st, which is about $50 at BabiesRUs.com. They say it's the first gate designed with room to let you stand firmly on the top step of your stairs before you open the gate (rather than reaching up and over to open your gate mid-climb with a baby in your arms.

I finally had to put up a gate. Until I took the LO upstairs to do something in my daughters room recently and he found a lollypop (or "suckerpop" LOL), I had no trouble keeping him downstairs. After that, I was constantly chasing him away from there. I found a walk-thru, pressure mounted gate at Lowes that has worked for me. It took about 3 days of crying "open" for him to realize that it wasn't getting him anywhere.

Also, I had to get toilet seat locks after having to remove the toilet in order to dislodge 2 toys that got flushed. It took about 20 minutes to get them out even with it removed... in the front yard, no less. Embarrassing.

Now, I just have to train the older kids to make sure the gate is closed and the lids are locked. That's been the hardest part of all.

Oh no! I dread the day Jack realizes he can lift up the toilet lid and toss toys in there.
I see a lock in our future too.

We used a baby gate at our apartment because it fit nicely in the entranceway to our kitchen. But it doesn't fit anywhere in our new house. So we've tucked it away. We have no stairs.

Good luck with the gate!
