I know that you are not supposed to give a baby cow's milk before one year of age, but what about other dairy products? I've heard that you can give yogurt, cheese, etc sooner than a year, but I don't know when. I was buying some jarred baby food last night and noticed that Beechnut sells different types yogurt and a mac and cheese w/ vegetables dinner in their stage 2 foods, which are labeled as being for 6 months and up. I tried to do some internet research on when you can start dairy products, but got widely different answers. Some sites said 6 months, some said 7-8 months, and others said not at all before a year. Maybe I should just call the pediatrician's office and ask a nurse to be sure...

ACcording to this guide at Babycenter.com, at 8 months or so. I think all the experts recommend waiting until 1 year old to introduce any dairy if there is a history of dairy allergy in the family. Maybe this guide will help...

I also was concerned about introducing dairy products before 12 months. I talked to my pediatrician who said if there were no dairy allergies in our families, we could introduce yogurt and some mild cheeses into his diet before 1 year. I think I started plain whole milk yogurt around 7 1/2-8 mos. However, I've heard of allergists recommeneding parents hold off until 12 mos.
I printed the charts from this site and have them hanging on my fridge. I don't think the info is generated by medical docs, but seems in line with recommendations I've read from professionals. They have specific info on dairy that you may find helpful. http://www.wholesomebabyfood.com/solidfood6to8montholdbaby.htm |
