Jack's mommy |
Do you give your baby vitamins?
Back when Jack was 6-7 months old, his pediatrician gave us a liquid vitamin to give him but only because there wasn't fluoride in our drinking water (in FL). Now that we've moved and there is fluoride, I was told it isn't necessary. But I know moms who are already giving their babies crushed baby vitamins and liquid vitamins bought at whole food stores. Now I'm wondering if I should be giving him a vitamin supplement at this age (15 mos) or not. Anyone know or ask their doc about this lately? |

No way! I think you could accidentally overdo it at Jacks age. And we didn't start giving our child vitamins until after he turned two - and he is a very healthy boy.
(He's in the 90th percentile in both weight & height, plus he rarely gets sick - knock on wood!) Flinstones makes a "my First Vitamin," and I think it's for ages two and up. I may be wrong. Anyway, just keep feeding him bananas & stuff & he'll be fine! |

I know there are so many concerns about giving kids vitamins. I have always given my son vitamins. He is almost 3 now and his pediatrician said it just makes up for what he doesn't get from food, it's going to hurt him in any way. He takes the Fintstones My First Vitamins and does 1/2 a tablet once a day. That is what my pediatrician recommended, she said the Walmart off brands were fine too, just as long as you do 1/2 a tablet.

I've often wondered about this too.
With both of my girls, I was advised to give them the polyvisol drops when they were babies b/c I was breastfeeding, but I never did. That stuff is nasty, and if your baby gets even a tiny bit of sun every day, that makes up for any lack of vitamin E in breastmilk. For my almost 4 year old though, I have asked our ped at every single appt if I should have her on flinstones or any other vitamin. Every time she tells me no - she says if she eats a fairly healthy diet, she's getting what she needs, and I shouldn't bother putting anything additional into her body. It's so strange how the opinions differ on this ... |
