Jack's mommy |
Can schools handle the complex issues of identity and sexuality? Kids are coming out of the closet at younger and younger ages because our society is so accepting now. But how are these children treated in school?
Here's one boy's story. Interesting read. http://www.newsweek.com/id/147790 ![]() |

Hmm. I'm actually pretty disappointed that newsweek would choose this particular case to use as a discussion point for this topic. This boy's story is NOT at all typical of the story of the majority of gay teenagers.
Also, it talks a lot about this boy being transgendered, which is not the same as being gay. This boy did happen to be gay also, but they are doing the public a disservice by treating those as the same. Anyway, it seems to me that by focusing solely on one particular extreme, sensationalist case, they are feeding into a whole lot of media hype. We have lots of heterosexual boys and girls who are extreme - chase members of the opposite sex, dress provacatively and are promiscous - but that isn't leading to stories saying that they shouldn't feel comfortable claiming their heterosexuality. I don't know. This whole article makes me angry and I would have expected better from newsweek. |
