The latest Parenting maggie tells moms to check out www.penzeys.com if they feel it's time to rehaul the ole spice rack (most herbs and powdered spices lose their zest after a year, it says).

I read this and thought - YES! Great spices! We received a bunch of these spices for our wedding and I remember being very "whatever" about it. I mean, spices are spices, right? But I was pleasantly surprised by them. I especially loved the containers of blended spices for steamed veggies and poultry. They were fantastic and we burned through them.

A local source for good spices cheap is Manna. As you walk in the front door, look over to the left hand wall about 1/2 way down. There are bulk spices over there. Always fresh, much cheaper than any other place in town. They also have bulk dried fruit, nuts, and grains.

I love Penzey's too. We have several of their Indian spice mixes.
