Does anyone know of a good kitchen goods store in Tuscaloosa/Northport? I need to buy a silpat and don't feel like driving to Birmingham ... and I am embarassed to say that even after nearly two years, I still don't know all the neat little stores in and around town!
We used to have a great kitchen store in the mall....but alas it's gone. I would try Sanford Restaurant Equipment. It's on the left right before you get to Dreamland and Steamer's. I have no idea what the exact address is - but I know it's down there. They have anything and everything you can imagine - I could spend HOURS just walking around in there.

No, Kristi, you're definitely not alone! I just really love to cook.
A Silpat is a silicone mat that you can roll pastry on, cut on, throw in the oven ... it's like the world's best parchment paper, in a way.
I'm making a new recipe for the 4th and experimented with parchment paper but I need to just bite the bullet and buy the silpat. You can see them here (assuming my link works):
Sanford Restaurant Supply--I was in there recently, I THINK I saw some silicone liners in there--not necessarily SILPAT. I can't remember. FYI--I did get a used restaruant style high chair there for $25. I really like it.
There used to be "The Gourmet Kitchen" here in town. It was my favorite store in town! It used to be where the children's shoe store is by Northrige Fitness. Then, it moved to a warehouse building near NorthBrook Apartments in Northport. (On the road that goes up between NorthBrook and the old FoodMax building--Fred's now??) They mostly do mail order, but do have a small shop. I haven't been in a long while, so I can't say that they are still there. That's where I got my silpat. It is worth the investment.
