What steps are you all taking to conserve energy in your house? Have you changed your light bulbs, stopped using the dryer so much, paid special attention to your thermostat, etc?

We have been trying really hard to lower our electric bill this month...our last one was $500!!!! GASP! Our pool uses about $150 a month, so that can't be lowered, but the rest is just us, so we are doing an experiment this month - I turn the air completely off during the day. Because we sleep with the air on 71, the house is cold in the morning and it doesn't get hot until around 5ish and then I turn it on for the evening. We have also been turning our computer off at night - we use to leave it on 24/7, but that just eats up energy too. As far as the lightbulbs, I'm not completely sold on those yet. I understand that they last longer, but they have to be disposed of properly - if they break, the "fumes" or gas or whatever inside of them are dangerous...so I'm not ready to take that risk yet.

We have the new bulbs throughout, they seem to be fine. I shut stuff off all the time (light natzi) and unplug appliances that we don't use often to save on the silent energy that they use just by being plugged in. We want one of those timed thermostats, but they cost, so until then we just self adjust like mentioned above. That is about all at this point. It takes money to save money (ironic isn't it?!!).

We have the new light bulbs and trying to not turn the air on unless we really need it. I also try to remember to turn off the computer because I used to leave it on most of the time.

Oh me my hubs is very much all about going green. We have the energy eff. light bulbs, I think our air never goes below 75, during the day he opens the blinds instead of turning on the lights lol, nothing stays plugged in, and anything to do with going green he is all about! which is good & he has also made me want to do these things. =)

we keep our air on 77, blinds closed, the boys keep the doors closed when they go out, we only run dishwasher when full, i use a clothes line to hang the cloth diapers out to dry, we keep lights turned off, turn computer off at night. and we also have the new lightbulbs.

we also use reusable shopping bags, 7th generation cleaning supplies, crunchy clean natural laundry detergent, cloth diapers, and un-paper towels.

We keep our air at 80 degrees and run our ceiling fans. I turn off the lights whenever possible and turn my computer off when not using it.

I want to change over the lights, but I still can't convince my DH. I wash my clothes in cold water rather than warm or hot and use tide for cold water.

lol... I thought I was doing good conserving energy by keeping my air at 74. I don't think I could live with it at 78 or 80.
