Life of Pi by Yann Martel

Description from Borderstores.com:

This brilliant novel combines the delight of Kipling's "Just So Stories" with the metaphysical adventure of "Jonah and the Whale, " as Pi, the son of a zookeeper, is marooned aboard a lifeboat with four wild animals. His knowledge and cunning allow him to coexist for 227 days with Richard Parker, a 450-pound Bengal tiger.

The son of a zookeeper, Pi Patel has an encyclopedic knowledge of animal behavior and a fervent love of stories. When Pi is sixteen, his family emigrates from India to North America aboard a Japanese cargo ship, along with their zoo animals bound for new homes.

The ship sinks. Pi finds himself alone in a lifeboat, his only companions a hyena, an orangutan, a wounded zebra, and Richard Parker, a 450-pound Bengal tiger. Soon the tiger has dispatched all but Pi, whose fear, knowledge, and cunning allow him to coexist with Richard Parker for 227 days while lost at sea.

Hey, I already read that one! I think that it is one everyone will enjoy. Loved it. Look forward to reading it again and discussing it. Smiler

Without giving anything away, I can say that it is one of those books that I found myself calling my son down to let him know what was going on time and time again.

Have any of you started reading the book yet? I have, I'm on chapter 11, and it's really good. I didn't want to put it down last night.

Good to know! I'm actually picking it up today. Can't wait to read it! Smiler
And ya know, MyMcDreamysMama...you bring up a good point...perhaps those who can't make the meeting can start a discussion online with those of us who did and still get some book talk in...
Perhaps the day after each meeting I'll create a thread for some further discussion. What do you guys think?

Ok - I bought it yesterday afternoon and I couldn't put it down last night!! I don't even remember what chapter I got to - but it is so good! Great choice for our second book.

Oh - and in case anyone hasn't picked it up yet - they have it in paperback at Barnes & Noble for $15 and it's on the "Summer Reading" table behind the Customer Service counter in the middle of the store - just FYI!!

You picked a good book to lead the discussion on Moozle. This book has book club discussion topics listed in the back. I don't know if most books are like that, but none that I have read recently (which would be 3 book in the last 2 years-I have no comparison). Lucky Lucky! Big Grin
