I'll be out of town for the first meeting, so I'll have to wait for the next one.
But I've read "Atonement" and thought it was pretty good (I didn't really "get" it though - neither did my mother-in-law, actually, so I know it wasn't just me - but a book club probably would have helped me get more out of it ...). I think it's a great choice and can't wait to hear how the first meeting goes! |

I'm looking forward to this. I haven't bought the book yet because I'm in the middle of this great book...The Omnivore's Dilemma....has anyone read it??

I haven't. You'll have to let us know how it is.
I bought "Atonement" yesterday and am looking forward to reading it. ***So who is going to read this book for our first meeting? PLEASE CHIME IN so we know there's a group of us who are all on the same page (no pun intended - hee hee).**** ![]() |

Kristi - I'm going to! I meant to get it this weekend, and didn't get to, but I'll be at Barnes and Noble on my lunch break one day this week.
I'm really looking forward to it! I know I'm getting ahead of myself (as I haven't yet bought or read the book), but how should we work this? Bring a list of questions/topics to discuss? Or agree on them beforehand? Or just wing it for the first one? I've never done a book club before :-) |

The book club I was in before we moved here had a host each month. She led the discussion by bringing questions and comments, though everyone pitched in with their own, too. It worked out well. She also reeled us in if we got off topic.

That's a good way to do it. At each meeting we'll pick another mom to lead the next discussion and bring questions. I'll do it for the first meeting and anyone else, please feel free to bring questions of your own for the group.
BTW, 1 chapter down in Atonement! ![]() |

Kristi - I just started it tonight and I"m page 75 or so. I finally made myself put it down so I could check email and get to bed. It's an easy read so far - very enjoyable!
Now I'm worried I'm going to finish it too fast and not remember details at the end of February! LOL Are you still enjoying it? |

I'm on chapter 3. I'm waiting for something to happen. I think it's right around the corner. But so far so good! ![]() |

I am reading "In Defense of Food" and it is awesome! I've always been suspicious of all this processed crap & have always laughed at my mother for trying every low- and no- fat piece of "food" put on the market, and this book just lays it all out there! I plan on reading this book out loud to my mother the next time we take a long drive (she can read, but I'll have to FORCE her to pay attention!), and I'll definitely be buying "The Omnivore's Dilemma." And I hope I can one day say this guy has changed my life So far, I'm too poor & too addicted to junk food to completely change my ways. But I'm starting to see the light! |

DistractedMom, would you mind telling me who it is by? My DH have always tried to buy everything as fresh as possible, but I would like to try and get the rest of my family in on it. They don't listen very well, so maybe if I got them a book they would. Does it talk about hydrogenated and partially hydrogenated foods? Thanks.

The author's name is Michael Pollan, and he talks about all the gross things that are added to the junk we call food nowadays, includinghydrogenated & partially hydrogenated fats.
I'm reading "In Defense of Foods," before "The Omnivore's Dilemma," but it would probably be better to do it the other way around. Although the one I'm reading does seem to stand on its own, so it may not matter. |
